Polly Gibbons with the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra
Tuesday, September 13, 2016 – 7:30 PM
OCCC Visual and Performing Arts Center Theater
Presented By
Polly Gibbons with the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra, the state’s premier concert jazz orchestra, team up for an evening of big band favorites and blues in an encore performance. Polly will serenade the audience with her warm, rich, soulful vocals and innate blues sensibility, and the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra will get your toes tappin’ with their classic big band repertoire.
Polly Gibbons is one of the most respected and talked about young singer/songwriters of her generation. Much esteemed by her contemporaries, Polly has built a reputation as being an original and gifted voice, and has been likened to many of the jazz and soul greats, bringing her own storytelling and earnest depth alongside unique humor and fun to performances.
Polly’s influences are brilliant, broad and inspired ~ from the poetry of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, to the be-bop of Charlie Parker, the deep wails of Mahalia Jackson’s gospel, to the emotional depth of Donny Hathaway, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone; the soul of Marvin Gaye, the blues of Buddy Guy and more contemporary brilliance in the sounds of Prince and D’Angelo.
The Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra features top jazz musicians, including members of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, professors of music from several surrounding universities and regional professional musicians. The OKCJO sponsors a four-concert season every year in their home venue, the Petroleum Club, at the top of the Chase Tower in downtown OKC. Under the leadership of Artistic Director John Allen, the ensemble regularly performs high quality big band and concert jazz music, serves musicians and the community through performances, and cultivates the artistic and educational development of the musical community.
