OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (July 29, 2022) — Oklahoma City Community College today announced fall enrollment is open for pharmacy externships with Walgreens. This is the second time OCCC has teamed up with the pharmacy to offer this valuable program to its students.
The partnership between the college and Walgreens is part of OCCC’s initiatives to strengthen its workforce development efforts, which includes filling roles in crucial fields in Oklahoma. Earlier this year, Walgreens offered an externship for OCCC students in the pharmacy technician program
“Pharmacy technicians serve an important role in healthcare and medical settings. As pharmacies expand patient care services, the need for pharmacy technicians is also expanding,” said Dr. Vince Bridges, OCCC Vice President of Academic Affairs. “Our pharmacy technician program is designed to meet the needs of our students and workforce partners through a combination of classroom instruction and real-word experience. This collaboration with Walgreens allows students to gain hands-on experience through their externship, while also obtaining professional networking needed to grow and learn.”
The program, designed to prepare students for the Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) necessary to become a certified pharmacy technician consists of classroom instruction, followed by an externship at Walgreens stores throughout Oklahoma where students shadow pharmacy team members.
The fall pharmacy technician class runs Aug. 16 through Oct. 6, and classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. More information on the pharmacy tech program is available online.
The pharmacy technician program is part of OCCC’s Community Outreach and Education programming, which provides short-term, non-credit courses designed to improve basic skills for adults and children. OCCC also offers health degrees as part of its Division of Health Professions focused on developing allied health professionals in the areas of Anesthesia Technology, Emergency Medical Sciences (EMT and Paramedic), Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Respiratory Care and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
