Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) will host the all-female country band Farewell Angelina at the school’s Visual and Performing Arts Center on Jan. 21.
The breakout group, named after Bob Dylan’s haunting ballad, features four powerhouse vocalists, dynamic songwriters and accomplished multi-instrumentalists. A bold blend of blazing violins and guitars to create heart-stopping melodies has won the group high praise and comparison to the Dixie Chicks and Pistol Annies.
The music tracking site RoughStock described the quartet as a “superstar act … with killer songs,†earning a place on its list of “Ones to Watch.†Farewell Angelina also made Rolling Stone’s “New Artists You Need to Know,†which cited “wickedly smart songwriting delivered with a healthy dash of sass.†The group delivers a “sonic knockout punch,†the magazine said.
Farewell Angelina is comprised of Ashley Gearing, Lisa Torres, Nicole Witt and Andrea Young, each an accomplished musician before they became close friends and launched out of Nashville. The band supplements its country identity with elements of bluegrass, pop, classical and rock. They have opened for Kenny Chesney, Old Dominion, Frankie Ballard and Jake Owen, among other star attractions.
Farewell Angelina’s performance is part of OCCC’s Performing Arts Series, which includes The Choir of Man in February and the team-up of Tom Paxton and the DonJuans in March.
