The photographic works of Oklahoman artist Sharon Burris will be on public display in the Inasmuch Foundation Art Gallery at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) through Jan. 24.
In “Composite Photography: Dark Worlds, New Realities,†Burris layers backgrounds and primarily botanical photographs onto glossy aluminum, creating complex, darkly fantastic worlds which often reveal unintended features.
Burris’s methods and inspiration come from a long personal history with the medium that began when she was a photojournalist is college. Since then, she has won numerous awards for her photography and news writing skills. As an instructor at Murray State College in Tishomingo, she branched into botanical and architectural subjects, particularly flower close-ups and window reflections.
Burris and her husband now live on a pecan farm in Ardmore. They both teach at Murray State College – he is the director of the school’s art department while she teaches communication and humanities classes. The college Board of Regents recently recognized Burris with the designation of professor emeritus for more than a decade of work at Murray State.
The OCCC Inasmuch Foundation Art Gallery, located inside the college’s Visual and Performing Art Center, 7777 S. May Ave., will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Dec. 16-23 and from Jan. 2-24. A reception is planned from 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 21.
