OCCC welcomes “Queen of Bluegrass†Rhonda Vincent and The Rage as part of the 2015-2016 Performing Arts Series. The performance will be held in the college’s Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) Theater Friday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
Rodger Harris, formerly with the Oklahoma History Center, will present a free educational talk prior to the performance, entitled “The High Lonesome Sooner Sound, A Very Brief History of Oklahoma Bluegrass Music” taking place from 6 – 6:45 p.m. in the VPAC Theater.
Since childhood, Rhonda Vincent has pursued music and has become one of the most recognized and honored musicians in the bluegrass genre with over 100 awards. Vincent’s songs have moments of soaring harmony along with bluesy phrasing that piles tension on top of tension and puts emphasis on the vocals.
Both Dolly Parton and Alison Krauss sing high praises for Vincent while both having collaborated with her. “For emotive power, sweet tone and loyalty to traditionalism, I’d put the new Rhonda Vincent album at the top of my shopping list,†said Craig Havighurst from the Wall Street Journal.
The talented lineup of world-class productions in the series will continue Thursday, Feb. 11 with the Metropolitan Opera Rising Stars at 7:30 p.m. in the VPAC Theater. Tuesday, Feb. 16, the Fiesta Mexico-Americana featuring Los Lobos and Ballet Folklorico Mexicano will perform at 7:30 p.m. Jim Brickman will be coming to the VPAC Theater Tuesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., followed by Kid Koala’s innovative “Nufonia Must Fall†in April.

Oklahoma City Community College opened the doors to the 1,049-seat Visual and Performing Arts Center Theater in early 2014. It features a large atrium with three-story high windows, state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment and will allow the college to host larger Broadway-style touring productions. The Visual and Performing Arts Center also houses an art gallery and academic center featuring a rehearsal room, library, six classrooms, seven studios, seven labs and faculty offices.
