This course will examine religion from the three sociological perspectives (structural-functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism), including the study of practices, social structures, historical backgrounds, development, universal themes, and the roles of religion in society. It will examine the functions religion serves in societies, the distinction between magic and religion, and the relationship between religion and other major social institutions such as the economy and politics.
