In this one-act existentialist play by Jean-Paul Sartre, we discover three recently deceased characters (Garcin, Inez, and Estelle) who find themselves trapped together in a single, oppressive room in hell where they have been brought together to confront the truth and the consequences of their actions in life. Expecting physical torture and burning pits of lost souls, they soon realize that their punishment is much more psychological in nature; they are condemned to an eternity of being each other’s tormentors. Throughout the play, it becomes clear that their damnation stems from their cruel, manipulative, and destructive treatment of others during their lives. Trapped in a relentless cycle of judgment and blame, they come to embody Sartre’s explorations of human freedom, responsibility, and the hellish consequences of denying one’s own culpability, captured in the iconic line, “Hell is other people.”
