Zach Sumner currently serves as President for the Board of the OCCC Alumni Association, when he is not working as a Legislative Senior Finance Analyst for the State of Oklahoma. Zach studied Philosophy and Accounting at OCCC and graduated in 2013.
“Studying at OCCC was the best time of my life, and it changed me for the better,” said Zach. “I was working in Student Life while I was in school, where I learned to write grants and lead projects on campus. I also made some great friends, with whom I am still close today.”
Zach has served as a board member of OCCC Alumni Association for four years and became its President in 2020. Under his leadership, his goal is to raise more funds for the Alumni Association scholarship to benefit more and more students each year.
“Although Covid has affected many of our plans, the cornerstone of the OCCC Alumni Association is to honor outstanding alumni, represent OCCC in the community, and provide funds to the scholarship. We are planning to launch more fundraisers, such as a Pet Calendar featuring the pets of alumni, to raise money for even more scholarships.”
Zach has taken his commitment to help others through scholarships very seriously. In fact, he’s currently working with the Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship that honors his mother, Kathleen Sumner. She did not have the opportunity to attend college after high school, but she never gave up on her dream of becoming a college student. After the age of 60, she enrolled in community college courses and is thriving academically. The scholarship in her name will support nontraditional students at OCCC who have completed at least 3 credit hours and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students who have never been to college, or who have not been a student for an extended time.
