Each year, more than 1,000 high school juniors and seniors take advantage of concurrent enrollment at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC), allowing them to earn college credit while still in high school. In fact, eligible high school students can receive up to six hours per semester, tuition free at OCCC starting the summer after their sophomore year in high school.
This summer, OCCC is offering both the 2014 and 2015 high school graduating classes, who have already taken concurrent courses at OCCC, a chance to keep their “momentum” going. Exclusive to OCCC students, the Concurrent Momentum Program allows students to take one summer course (three hours), tuition free, regardless of which college or university they will be attending in the fall.
Eligible students must meet the following requirements:
• Students must have taken courses for credit at OCCC as a junior or senior through the concurrent enrollment program.
• Students must complete a brief application and agree to provide final high school transcripts.
• Students must enroll in at least one three-hour summer course before May 25.
• Students must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
“We love our concurrent students at OCCC,” said OCCC Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions Christy Rogers. “These students are well prepared. Many have already accumulated the credits that will put them far ahead of other college freshmen and sometimes allow them to graduate faster at their home institution. This program also allows students to keep the momentum going while saving money.”
Most concurrent students take courses from the general education core curriculum that is directly transferrable to any institution, inside and outside the state of Oklahoma. Students do not need to complete a new application for admission, but the deadline for participation is May 25.
“Many of our concurrent students choose to attend OCCC after they graduate high school,” Rogers said. “We also understand that some of these gifted students are headed to other campuses in the fall. Particularly, students who graduated in 2014 and may have spent time at another institution since graduation, they shouldn’t hesitate to take part in this program. This is a chance for them to return home. Our program offers a great incentive to keep their progress moving forward.”
