Thank you for agreeing to be a Notetaker. You can receive credit on your activities transcript obtained from Student Life.
(Research indicates those who take notes for others take better notes and therefore usually make better grades.)
TAKING NOTES FOR SOMEONE ELSE
These are some practical suggestions for taking notes for someone else, as well as strategies to help you improve your own notetaking abilities.
General Information:
- Be sure to attend all lectures.
- Sit where you can see and hear.
Format:
- Record the name of the class, the date, and the page number at top of page.
- Use dark ink and write on one side of the page.
- You can use the "NCR paper" that will make a copy of what is written on the top page to other pages. Use 2 sheets at a time. Or use regular paper and the copy machine in Disabilities Office.
- Write legibly.
- Leave plenty of room on the page white space. Good margins, skip lines between topics and main ideas.
- Make identifying marks for important information: (asterisks, circles, boxes, underlining, indentation and starring for showing important information.
- Use a ? mark to show uncertainty with info.
- Use ?spl if not sure of spelling.
Listening:
- Pay attention to specific phrases or words:
"Now this is important ."
"Remember that .."
"The important idea is ."
"The basic concept is .."
"You'll need to remember .."
"This is on the test ."
What to write:
- Definitely copy:
- Anything written on the board or on an overhead.
- Any information that is repeated or emphasized.
- All numbered or listed items.
- All terms and definitions.
- Examples
- New words and ideas.
- If the instructor refers to the text, include the page number in notes.
