Biography

Dr. Wheat is the OCCC SLPA Program Director and professor. She received degrees from the University of Norman, the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. She has practiced as a speech-language pathologist since 1991 in schools, outpatient clinics, hospitals, private practice, and home health care settings. Dr. Wheat is active in ASHA, having served as Chair of the School Finance Committee in 2015 and on the committee from 2012 to 2015.  She serves OSHA as Schools Issues Chair and the Oklahoma State Education Advocate (S.E.A.L.). She consults with Oklahoma school districts on SLP and SLPA concerns. She has taught hybrid and online courses beginning 2008 which include Fundamentals of Speech, Communication for Teachers, Foundations of Speech and Language, Introduction to Articulation, Professional Issues for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants and School Issues for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants. Dr. Wheat routinely presents at OSHA, ASHA and educational conferences on topics including; Supervision of SLPAs, Negotiation, Service- Delivery Models for SLPs, Communication Styles, School Finance for SLPs and various educational research topics of interest.
